McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s premier wine-growing regions. It is located one hour’s drive south of Adelaide, close to beautiful beaches and stunning rolling hills. The Vale, as it is known to locals, is famous for producing top quality premium red wines and there are about 80 cellar doors to visit in the area. McLaren Vale is the gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula which offers spectacular coastal scenery, surf beaches, pristine national parks and beautiful rural landscapes. McLaren Vale has a reputation for gourmet food and visitors are spoilt for choice with its many fine restaurants. The Gums is walking distance to D’Arenberg’s Cube and Lloyd Brothers Wines, (with a guests’ only shortcut), and Shingleback cellar door and the McLaren Vale Visitor Centre are also a stone’s throw away. It is 10 minutes from historic Willunga and its Saturday Farmers Market. It’s an easy ride to Willunga along the Shiraz trail and there are many back roads through the vines you can explore by bike and end up at some of the best wineries in the country.
Then there’s the sea. The gorgeous southern beaches are only minutes away. Moana has a clean body surfing break, at Port Willunga is the iconic ruined jetty and the Star of Greece wreck, or try Maslins for Australia’s first unclad beach and a stunning seascape of ochre cliffs and pristine sand. At Southport is the mouth of the Onkaparinga River, favourite of surfers, fishers and kayakers and a little further north is the spectacular Port Noarlunga reef where you can snorkel with great schools of fish.
